Dear  Parents,

 It has come to my attention that the Berwyn police have begun ticketing drivers who are double-parking on Scoville Avenue to drop off and pick up students.  This seems to be in response to the complaints of the residents on Scoville Avenue.  I met with Police Chief Kushner, Alderman Michele Skyrd and several others during the summer at their request.  It was decided that the city would begin a “right-turn only” at the corner of Scoville and 26^th Streets.  There was no discussion at that time of a plan to ticket parents dropping off and picking up students momentarily.  That is something that the police must have decided to do since our meeting.  Two parents reported to me this morning that the police told them that this new ticketing was at my request.  I did not at any time ask the police to ticket parents. 

 I stated my concern at the curriculum night for students’ safety when parents are picking up and dropping off because I have seen students walk in front of or behind cars.  I have also seen parents encourage students not to cross at the corner with the crossing guards.  I encouraged parents to walk in groups rather than drive to school to avoid many problems.

 Driving and parking laws are enforced by the police, not the school.  I am hopeful that these issues will be resolved with your cooperation.

 Below is the crossing guard location and schedule for Hiawatha School.

 There will be no crossing guard supervision during the hours of 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M.

ESCUELA HIAWATHA

Estimados Padres,

Me han informado que la policía de Berwyn ha comenzado a multar a los conductores porque se estacionan en doble fila en la Avenida Scoville para bajar y recoger a sus niños.   Esto ha sido en reacción a las quejas de los residentes en la Avenida Scoville.  Me reuní a su petición con el Comandante de Policía Kushner, Concejal Michele Skyrd y otros durante el verano.   Se decidió que la ciudad comenzaría “solamente una vuelta a la derecha” en la esquina de la Scoville y calle 26^th.  No hubo discusión ese momento de un plan para multar a los padres por bajar y recoger a los estudiantes.  Esto es algo que la policía decidió después de nuestra reunión.  Dos padres me informaron que la policía les dijo que esta nueva multa fue mi solicitud.  En ningún momento le pedí a la policía que multara a los padres.     

Yo presente mi preocupación en la noche de plan de estudios la seguridad de los niños cuando los padres recogen y bajan a sus niños porque he visto estudiantes caminando en frente y atrás de carros.   También he visto padres animar a los estudiantes que no crucen en la esquina con el personal que cruza.  Les pido a los padres que caminen en grupos en vez de manejar a la escuela para evitar muchos problemas. 

 Las leyes de conducir y estacionar son impuestas por la policía, no por la escuela.  Espero que estos asuntos se resuelvan con su cooperación.
